Non-Woven Dissolving Roll
Support material that dissolves cleanly in water, perfect for delicate embroidery work and lace creation.
A dissolving roll is a temporary backing. It holds fabric steady while the needle works, then washes away completely in water, leaving only the stitching behind. It is what makes free-standing lace possible at all — the embroidery is stitched onto the backing, and once the backing is gone the stitches hold their own shape.
Why embroidery needs a backing at all
An embroidery needle pushes fabric down and pulls it back thousands of times per design. Without something holding the fabric flat, it puckers, shifts and distorts the pattern. A backing takes that force instead of the fabric. For most work a permanent backing is fine, but on lace, sheer fabrics and anything where the reverse side is visible, whatever you used has to disappear afterwards.
Dissolving cleanly is the whole specification
The one thing that matters is that the material leaves nothing behind. Residue stiffens the finished piece, dulls the thread colour and can yellow over time — usually only becoming visible after the customer has taken delivery. Water temperature also matters: some grades dissolve in cold water, others need hot, and using the wrong one on heat-sensitive fabric causes its own problems.
Handling and storage
Because the material is designed to dissolve in water, it also reacts to humidity in the air. Keep rolls sealed and away from damp storage, and handle them with dry hands — a roll that has absorbed moisture in storage tears during stitching.
